Warp + Weft, 2021

‘Warp and Weft’ responds to the LFA open call for bench designs in the area of Aldgate by seeking to celebrate the East End’s long-running relationship with fabric. From the initial settlement of European weavers in the 17th Century through to the development of an industrial textiles industry in the 20th century, the East End has been home to the creation and distribution of cloth for a long time.

Drawing inspiration from the process of weaving itself, the proposal seeks to highlight this part of the area’s history. The project’s title refers to the two pieces of thread used to create fabric, and serves as a metaphor for the rich, layered and diverse history of the area.
